Norah checked the clock on the wall, the seconds ticking away too slowly for her tastes. Time seemed to be going a little too slowly, actually, but maybe that was because she was bored. There was nothing to do at this time of night, the middle of the night, when you were hopelessly unable to fall asleep. She sighed quietly, under her breath, and closed her eyes. Laying in her bed, in the girls' dormitory, Norah was trying to fall asleep, but having slight trouble with it.
The slow patter of the rain against the window was a comforting and familiar sound on sleepless nights like these. Norah would remember the days that she would lie awake at night as a kid, playing with her toys and giggling to herself. She had never been able to fall asleep when it was thundering, and as if on cue, right as she thought of this a huge roaring clap of thunder bursted in the sky. A flash of lightning followed. Norah squeezed her eyes shut even tighter and thought of the pretty after-rain smell that would be everywhere outside tomorrow. It was the only happy thought she had.
Norah sighed again, comfortable in her soft flannel pajamas, blond hair a messy, frizzy wreck. She turned over and buried her face in her pillow, wishing she wouldn't have to get up to get her wand. Then she could do a charm to temporarily stop herself from being able to hear and she could fall asleep without the thunder. Once again, a loud explosion of thunder filled the room. It was like whenever she thought of it, it would happen. Well maybe I just shouldn't think of it then, Norah decided in her thoughts. Slowly and easily, the tight grip of her eyelids loosened and she attempted to fall back asleep once more, ignoring the fact that it probably wouldn't work like the stubborn so-called insomniac that she was.
